A whole new experience
If you are a new customer of Dean Morris Cards - hello, welcome, it is lovely to have you here. If you are one of our fantastic existing customers you may have noticed we have had some work done! When we opened our first online store back in the dark ages of the Internet in the late 20th Century there wasn't much available in terms of e-commerce software. We used some open-source software called Zen Cart. It was awesome! We stuck with it for years, but now the time has come to update. So we have moved to the Shopify platform...
Send a Card With Pride
At the very start of July this year we were part of a group of 50 Greeting Card Association members who got together to celebrate Pride in London. It was an amazing day! Several members of the GCA wanted to celebrate both Pride and the industry we work in, and so a group got together and decided to make it happen! The plan was simple, get some LGBT+ publishers, owners, staff and supporters and celebrate our community and industry. And what better way to do that then with a few greeting cards! We all met up on a bright sunny Saturday morning. We had...
The appeal of rude Greeting Cards
"I love your cards but they are a bit too rude for my shop." At trade shows we have heard this from so many potential customers. They are right that a lot of our cards are a bit rude, some are outrageously naughty, but we have an awful lot more cards without any swearing then we do with. Back in the late 20th Century when Dean Morris Cards was started we were a pioneer of filth! Most companies preferred to stear clear of of the more coarse language we brought to the market - cards with fluffy bunny's, formular one...
Mothers Day
We have had "Flowers from the Garage" day, and the next annual celebration we are looking forward to is Eurovision! No it's not, it's the Coronation!! No ... it's Mother's Day! We have of course launched some lovely new Mothers Day cards available on the site now. We will be sending some newsletter emails about the new cards and reminders to ensure you get your orders in. But we also know for some this is quite an emotional day, so you can update your profile to opt out of Mothers Day cards, or Fathers day while you are there.
Adopt A Shop for Christmas
Has anyone else noticed everyone is getting ready for Christmas a little earlier than usual this year? We are – the Christmas trees went up two weekends back. There is no other way to say it – 2020 has been a shit year! One of our most popular Christmas Cards this year seems to have hit the sentiment perfectly looking at how many of you are buying it … Fuck 2020! We have friends and family in all four countries of the UK who have had to go through different lockdowns, tiers and restrictions. And of course, our stockists and...
A look back at Birmingham Pride
This past weekend was Birmingham Pride, and my husband asked me if he could write a guest blog post for me about Pride and what it means to him. Below were his observations of the weekend. I’m 42 and have no idea what music kids today listen to – indeed I had no idea who most of the performers on the main stage were. Saturday’s main stage line up I knew two out of 15 acts, and Sunday four out of 13. The DJ I saw on the main stage was a performer – not just filler between acts –...
And for something completely different...
I think it’s something I am reasonably qualified to do, certainly more so than tiling (tried that once, never again) or football. I also believe it’s a part of the greeting card industry that some people within don’t like to acknowledge and yet rightly or wrongly it’s the one aspect of the industry that often generates the most media attention. This was very much in evidence towards the end of January when a less than kind post on Mumsnet about some of my ruder Valentine’s cards made it to a selection of national tabloids. I’m very proud of my place...
This Christmas Don’t Say Fuck or Bugger
This week the UK said goodbye to Big Brother! When it started I loved it, do you remember Caggy from the first series? It became a very different programme over the years, budgets went up, media coverage exploded, and careers were made and forgotten about. Of course it reached it’s peak with the Davina parody character’s iconic line “You’re live on Channel 4 – don’t say fuck or bugger!” I probably stopped watching around the 2005 / 2006 series, you can work out when you stopped watching Big Brother with this handy listing of all the Big Brother winners on the BBC....
Donald Trump’s Height, Nationality & Top Questions You Need Answered… Well, Sort Of.
We’ve been trawling through what the ladies and gents around the world are asking about our favourite person, Donald Trump. Yes we can do that, didn’t you know? And I have to say, the game’s up. We know exactly what it is that you’ve been asking Google about him and we’re here, right now, to answer some of those really burning questions. Not the ordinary ones, mind you, like ‘What are his views on this or that international crisis’ I’m talking the big issues that you obviously really want to know, like Donald Trump’s height, age and ‘Is he in today?’....
Christmas is here!
Not long now until the John Lewis 2016 Christmas advert is on, the first showing of the Coco-Cola Holidays are Coming advert and the shops are full of Christmas gifts, decorations and adverts. Wait, the shops are already full of Christmas stuff and its only November!? Every year there are complaints about shops being full of Christmas merchandise and signs way too early – people like to keep Christmas special, preserve the magic and build up to December. And that is very understandable, last night driving into Birmingham I passed a house that already has its Christmas tree and decorations...
